When the car is this old it's better to check how many volts you have on the glow plugs.

With dirty contacts on the timer relay and a corroded harness you ends up throwing away glow plugs that still have plenty of life left in them.

will check the glow plug control unit , make sure the contacts are clean

 

when I take a measurement, how many volts should I be getting at the glow plug ?

Compare with battery voltage, as for the contacts not all relays can be opened without at least cosmetic damage.

Keep wondering about these TU's why and who came up with the design of the head gasket with that dreadful elastomer/viton pressed insert on the main oil feed passage ?! They're pretty much bullet proof engines apart from this head gasket problem , and they never redesigned the head gasket from the first day of the TU series production up until they replaced it with Prince engine ... a lot of years to correct something and a lot of PSA models affected by this issue yet no one didn't seem to bother .

 

There's only one head gasket from Erling which is "solid" , without that insert , unfortunately it's for 76mm bore engines .. all the others both OE and aftermarket are with the insert .

The TU is a redesign of the X with plenty of design features shared... but the oil feed was moved.

Some of those engines had a non bonded circular Quad-Ring like seal that you had to put in place yourself but others didn't. You don't hear much about head gasket failure and it's a very good thing when your engine block is slanted at 72° to the back!

Yes i remember those old X engines , odd mounting angle almost like boxer engine !

 

I worked on a two 1.4 XY engines , but it was long time ago ... access to the block was good but no good with regards to the head , oil filter replacement was amusing on them !

 

Never taken one fully apart though , just service and carburetor cleaning/adjustment .

 

They went pretty good (in 205 and BX) , around 70-75Hp i think it was for 1.4 variant ...

Dropped it off at Miles last Tuesday to get various bits done including the fuel pump.

 

As of the week before it still refused to start, of course after leaving it with Miles about 30 mins after i'd left and on the way home the bloody thing started first turn of the key - damn car seems to just hate the cold weather lol

 

Fuel pump being changed anyway, also either replacing the ignition amp or just redoing the thermopaste and maybe chuck on a new coil / leads / techo relay and see how it keeps running.  Also getting the full service sorted as it was due in a month or two anyway so coolant, oil, filter, brake fluid, etc.  Also discovered a new oil leak (based on the patch on the road when i got home) so just waiting to see what that is and resolve accordingly.

After 4 years I went and bought some speakers for the rear- so I now have a complete sound system 4 years or so after 'finishing' my resto...

MOT day. Pass and no advisories :DB)

 

went to my usual place, bit of a trek but she gets a run there and back, he knows the car and works on lots of older cars particularly Citroens and Peugeot, and commented that she’s in good order - I think that means more to me than the mot pass!

Miserable day but MoT passed for me last week too - a shameful 380 miles since the last one.

 

Then went out on Sunday for my first autosolo in a year.  Managed to get two wrong tests and three cone penalties but clung onto third in class and ninth overall, so could have been worse!

 

No pics again as MoD property, so here's a static one on MoT day instead.

Had a local car show at Ripon on Sunday just gone so with the help of @Richie-Van-GTi took the TD & 1.1 GTI rep for a change, they got as much attention as the GTi does:D

Recent fun for me has included:

 

- exhaust clamp failing resulting in my rear silencer and centre silencer parting company whilst driving along - had to drive 20 miles home with the rear silencer in the boot and the sound of just one small centre silencer to listen to - sourced a new heavy duty clamp a few days later and got that fitted - quiet exhaust again and thankfully no damage anywhere.

 

- return of annoying occasional non starting issue (despite fitting a replacement tacho relay) that amusingly now can be sorted by wiggling the tacho relay next to the ecu lol

 

- 2 instances of the car just cutting out completely while backing off the throttle - first time was only in a local 30 zone so managed to coast to a halt, got it restarted and it then ran fine to and from the shops.  2nd time not great when i was doing 70 odd on the M3 - thankfully managed to coast into one of the refuge zones, got it restarted and carefully drove the last few miles home.  Having a look suggests this might be AFM related, so seeing as that's one of the few things i've never done i'm going to get it sent off to be refurbed (if i can remember who it is that does them - possibly APT?)

It all sounds relay related, probably a duff one.

 

Atp is the only uk source for remanufactured  flap type afm to my knowledge

Got the bases on my Gti rear 1/2 leather seats fitted at last after sewing in new Zips by hand  last night as the originals were siezed and broken. Not a job Id want to do again lol

Very little, stripped the driver's door off one of them to get rid. Tinkered with a few other bits to be removed in the process.

Slow long term project.

Appear to have sorted my previous cut out issue related to lightly moving the tachy relay - last time it cut out i decided to completely unplug it then reconnect and when i did i got a fairly satisfying click - since then hasn't cut out once so thinking it might have not been 100% tightly secured / connected.  Although to be on the safe side i'm still carrying a spare relay with me as a backup. 

 

Next issue to sort is the bonnet hinge on the drivers side where the bolt into the body has dropped out since i last opened the bonnet last week.  Plus probably time to give the engine bay a going over as there's a few areas of light surface rust fairly close to the earth point for the Morette's.

I found water leak in the cylinder #2. Cylinder head removed and then the guilty found, the head gasket. 
It was easy to slacken the head bolts. I thought cylinder head not torqued properly. May be this caused the gasket problem

check the block has not cracked across the back at the base of the liners where the head bolts pull up.

I was happy that the problem would be solved by simply replacing the cylinder head gasket. Unfortunately, when I finished sanding, I found that the head was cracked. What a disappointment.
