Looks great, out of interest what grades of paper etc do you use to flat it?

What, straight away? Or after 1200-1500?

Straight up bud , buffs up easily and finish is good , does take a while but it works a treat. If there are any bad (dry ) bits that will take ages I do sometimes 1500 first

So another update managed to squeeze a few hours on her this morning before work and flatted the other rear quater and roof pillar.

Another silent follower here! Keep up the updates, your good work is inspiration for my project and i appreciate your doing some things a bit differently. :) Since i'm hopeless at bodywork i've had little to contribute but i still enjoy reading.

Can't believe you left the sunroof trim on to paint, 2 mins takes it off!

Can't believe you left the sunroof trim on to paint, 2 mins takes it off!

I generally didn't no how they come off and tried and nearly snapped something so just left it , it's not really made any difference tbh mate

Well to ease flattening/polishing...... iirc (disclaimer), take the (nearest front of car) swivel light out. It reveals a philips head screw and a 10mm nut. Take them off, and you can then remove the front (outer) sunroof trim by pulling to the front of car, which means you can then remove the sides by pulling to the back.

Take the two buffer/stop things off on the rails at the back of sunroof rails, remove the sunroof internal handle, and you can then slide the glass right out the back of the rails.

Out of interest, what colour of white/paint code have you used?

Good job I didn't just try pull them off then haha , tbh I'm glad you have said as I want to paint the trim gloss black as it's faded so happy days.

It's EWT I think , gave the paint shop the reg and model and colour name and this is what they have given me , I think there are a couple of different shaded the later ones being a bit more creamy but this isn't which I'm happy about , really like the colour .

cool..... EWT is the same as mines, (Blanc Meije is the correct name), POWT is the base coat and lacquer version iirc.

my trim's been painted in RAL????....... "for me" it was the closest to the original colour..... but if you want black or even gloss black go for it, i look forward to seeing it (but secretly think you'd be making a mistake....).

If you are looking to replicate the original finish you'll probably need a fancy primer, texturier, and a matting additive...... each to his own though!

Look forward to seeing you progress and hope it makes you happy as mine does.

The rebuild is the good/easy bit btw.

Ok so abit of progress today. I started with a few bits that just needed a quick freshen up , when the car was sprayed red quite a few things ended up with overspray on them so anything that has any red on needs to be sorted , first up it was the fan housing , had quite abit of red on it aswel as dirt and just general ageing .

20150715_135628_zpsooo17a72.jpg

20150715_135618_zps5qfggmho.jpg

But after a good clean as some quick fire black it was looking a lot better

20150715_162634_zpsilpfkp7e.jpg

20150715_144713_zps38zlgbq4.jpg

A few more items got a quick once over , (headlight holders , horn , sunroof vacuum box)

20150715_144704_zpsl5gef7iq.jpg

Rattle tins away now it was time to move on to the proper stuff , so slam panel , bonnet hinges , bonnet stay and bumper brackets all seeing some treatment

So this is the slam panel before

20150715_145050_zpstrortdu8.jpg

After some primer

20150715_185913_zpssrnbhiqj.jpg

And then some alpine white looking very nice

20150715_203647_zpsd0jgeih5.jpg

And here are the rest

20150715_203535_zpsujnzgqdq.jpg

20150715_203550_zpscfkqtpgm.jpg

20150715_203600_zpssqcf3aqk.jpg

So that was a start on the niggly bits a few more bits that need to be a high gloss black before I move onto the rest of the panels and side trim etc .

The few bits that where just quickly blasted back where dry so brought them home tonight and fitted them

20150715_220039_zps9lfaa5tt.jpg

20150715_220059_zps2wuucmxg.jpg

Still got to fit fans but need some new jubilee clips for the rad hoses so will grab them and fully fit etc .

So today I had a few hours spare before work to went to the workshop and picked up my white bits (haha) , also prepared and primered the scuttle , wiper arm , mirrors rear boot panel and petrol cap (forgot to get a pic )

I got home and decided to fit the fan and slam panel and it's all beginning to slowly look like a car again

Looking good... although I must admit I'm not entirely convinced about painting the wiper motor like you have, wires, rubber, plastics and all

Was a (quick spruce up literally) had loads of red over spray on it from before hand and I was out of fizz tin black so just hit it with some silver I had left over , the scuttle is been done in a proper gloss black and obviously will be over the top so it's very rare it will ever be seen etc .

20150721_200528_zpskltfomtd.jpgAlso finished the side badges with a refresh kit but on gloss black rather than the old grey style plastic.
