What Gearboxes Will Fit An S 16 Block?

Recommended Posts

As above really. I have a gti 6 box in the 205 at the minute. And the right hand hand lock is very poor. And I'm looking at a box that will give a bit more acceleration.

1.6 box will give the best acceleration, but you'll suffer at the top end - motorway driving would be an issue too.

I'm not fussed about top end. What do you mean by an issue?

Well 'issue' maybe too strong a word. What I mean is that you'll be higher up in the rev range at motor way cruising speed, so noisey and less fuel efficient. There are some good threads regarding gearbox choice and intended application. You can even create a hybrid a box with different crown and pinion selections, so the world's your oyster - just have a little search as I know it's been covered before in detail ;)

Be realistic about what you want from the car, I do probably 1 long journey in mine per year down to Pugfest, so I can put up with the short gearing of the 1600 gearbox as it makes the car accelerate like its tyres are on fire. It will sit happily at normal cruising speed of 70-75mph doing around 4000rpm.

The problem is the 6 gears.. That's makes it larger.

You can also take the box from a Xsara VTS (with the same RFS engine). That has 5 gears and matched with the engine.

And gives a terrible right.lock.

The xsara box is not the same as the gti6 6 speed box...

It's a 5 speed box and smaller, just like the 1.6 box... Only the gearing is different

I meant the 6 speed box gives a terrible right lock.

So for acceleration go for the 1.6 box

And for normal comfy use, use the vts box?

I found the 309 1600 on carbs had closeish gears 1st to 4th and a taller 5th for the longer runs....

Very close to the 1600 box with a taller 5th if ye like...

For normal use, stick to a VTS or S16 box. These are shorter than the 1.9 gti box and might suite the engine better.

1.6 box is really short. It's big fun, but as a daily it would get annoying....

I don't think you'll get what you want that way, as you'll only get a shorter 1st gear and loose the 6th.

I mean, the car shouldn't behave much differently, but you'll get your lock back for sure :).

Take a look at this table of gear ratios and speeds: http://www.205gti.com/techgearboxUK.htm

Thank for the link. From what people have said, the 1.6 box is shorter through all gears?
