'rattling' Sound From The Bottom End

Recommended Posts

Atreides

Ok guys, now I've sorted my blown manifold gasket, I've noticed another sound which seems to be coming from the bottom end. You can't really hear it from the top of the engine bay, and it only become apparent when you lean down towards the front of the car. The sound in my car cannot be heard from inside the car. I'm thinking it might just be worn out bearings/shells as the engine has 155000 on it now, and I don't think it has ever had a bottom end refresh.

I've found the following video on youtube which very closly replicates the sound my car is making, even though it's not a 205! Skip to about 01.00, and ignore the 'sqeeking noise...it's the 'rattling' noise that's the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPJc4-RgDWU

BTW, my engine is a 1.9 XU.

Is does it all the time, but does not get worse/louder with revs.

With regard to the clutch, I'll check this in the morning...

I finally got round to checking this, and the noise goes when the clutch is depressed. I'm guessing this means throw out bearing noise?

Just to clarify, by 'throw out bearing' I mean release bearing (old habit!)...

Am I right in thinking the BE boxes are prone to release bearing 'rattle'? Thinking about it, I'm sure one of my old 205's used to have this noise, as well.

mine does the exact same thing and im sure its the throw out bearing. goes away when clutch almost fully pressed. when i put it together, iremember it being loose on the drive shaft, actually very loose, but after asking around a few clutch specialist they said it is normal for a clutch bearing to run a decent bit of clearance. i took a chance and put it together thought it be ok. in hindsight i wish i had of looked onto it a bit further. are there different sizes? mine was a cheap ebay clutch its an early 405 mi16 clutch and 2ltr xu10 flywheel on a 1.9 8v motor.

I've left it for now, as I'm sure it's the clutch release bearing and the sound has not got any worse. You'd easily be able to tell if it's the same 'rattle' as I've got as you can't really hear it from above the engine, only when you listen from lower down at the front of the car (valve clatter would obviously be more obviously be the opposite).

ah, mine does this, it has done, and i've done several clutch and release bearing changes, i think it's something to do with the box itself.
