the push one..? yeah I can go check again but I pushed it on and checked it when fitting the starter.

I thought it was the starter solenoid rumbling but you can actually feel its that big brown relay..

relay has nothing to do with the engine turning over!

why does it rumble when I turn the key..?

Would the order I fitted the wires onto the terminal on the solenoid make a difference..?

EDIT:

forgot to mention theyre some plugs not connected that didn't seem to be connected before the change so I assume they don't make a difference

Carbon canister plug

Throttle body temp plug

and I think another..

Bought one of these this morning to get to the bottom of my non starting problem...

SAM_0539_zps093117a7.jpg

I started off by doing the basics and checked the battery which had 12.55v so that's fine..

Out of curiosity I tried to start the car again,

The big brown relay rumbled for a second and stopped

The fuel pumped primed

the fuel pump priming and the rumbling stopping was new so I tried to start it which instantly did nothing... even I know that means an earth fault.

Then it hit me, I didn't fit the big black earth to the gearbox.. AWESOME

The car fired into life, however it wont run for along.. it sounds like its only running on 2/3 cylinders and dies... :(

Checked the plugs and they look like they have all been sparking and all smell of fuel so must have fuel..

Any ideas/tips..?

Did put it back together though as well :D

I just swopped the plugs for known working ones out my old engine to see if it's maybe those super fours but it made no difference..?

Could it be the crank sensor..?

have you got spark?

I'll be honest I haven't had them out on the rocker cover to actually see if I have spark but they all showed signs of black on the new plugs to give the impression they're sparking.

Would using the 1300 ecu cause this problem with the car being a 1400 now..?

Hope you liked it there too :D

To continue, the map sensor wasn't plugged in and my inlet air temp plug had snapped... Bloody old French wiring....

You had the yellow e36 too?

Much much better with the map sensor, tried to solder the plug back on the wires for the inlet temp but the copper is fried so I'm thinking about taking the plug to the local breakers and seeing if I can get a plug to match so I can cut the wires on the look back to good copper and crimp the new plug on..

Yeah I've got the yellow e36 too.

just find any pug or citroen before about 98/99 with a map sensor, usually will be the same colour plug (colour indicates the position and width of the keyway, so a plug off a different component will do the job if its the same colour, like coolant gauges and front fog lamps on later cars than a 205 are both 2 pin blue. )

Sorry for the confusion, the map plug was just unplugged

It's the throttle body inlet temp gauge that's snapped off.. Little two pin grey one under the throttle body.

It idles so much better with the map sensor in but still isn't right, I'm hoping once it knows how hot/cold the air is it'll settle down and pur :)

It won't do much at all, the change is the engine and the ECU is not suited to it, A remap if anyone does it will be needed I'm afraid

Would a xsi ecu solve it miles..?

I thought only being 70cc or so different and similar cam, it would be within the limits of the oem rallye ecu.. Only guessed though.

The problem is injection works in quite fine tolerances mate ,

not like a carb where you'd change the jet and alter the ignition timing etc.

1400's use a different system I think, No map sensor from memory, thou I maybe wrong as it's been a few years since I've seen one

Hmmm... I'll see how it is after I fix the plug and go from there.

I have a ecu I can buy to try if its still not right... After that I'm lost for ideas haha

Miles

Just buy a plug & Crimps from VVP, saves mucking around with joins which cause extra resistance in the circuit
