[misc_work] My 205 Gti 1.9 Running Project

Recommended Posts

RickyD

Good Afternoon All,

I joined Pug ownership a few months ago (Saturday 13th March) and thought I would create a running blog of things I've been doing to the car. First of all this is my 1st ownership of a Peugeot and Iconic Hot Hatch of the 80's/90's.

My main daily drive is an Audi A6 2.0 TDI S-Line Lemans 170, therefore I have the luxury of the Audi when I need it and the fun factor of the Pug for dry summer blasts/cruising. I am a parent of one glorious daughter who will be three in June, therefore my spare time is very little as I also enjoy running and detailing my cars in my spare time.

Anyway enough about my cars and back to the Pug.

The specifications are as follows:-

Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Phase 1.5

Registered: January 1991 H-Plate

Owners: 8, I think. However I will update this as when I get the time

Colour: Graphite Grey

Mileage: 88,000miles

Since buying the car I have had it taxed for 6 months and MOT'd which consisted of the following which needed to be carried out at my local friendly garage:-

1) Welding to aftermarket 4-branch manifold as it was excessivly blowing. I will need to purchase a new one at some point, however it appears to be fine and is running really well. I also acheive around 30mpg

2) Brake Hose Flexi's all replaced as they were badly torn.

3) New suspension arms.

4) Adjust rear hand brake as the performance was poor.

Items of which I have replaced or repaired are as follows:-

1) Fitted OEM Clarion Cassette Player and obtained code from Salvage Breakers.

2) Re-fitted rear wash pipe as it has become loose.

3) Replaced gear stick as one of the previous owners had hacked it off and put an aftermarket leather one and which was worn. I also obtained a non-GTI standard gear knob with the white top.

4) Replaced the reverse switch as it had no reversing lights when I bought the car.

5) Repaired brake lights, cleaned up the connection and the switch now operates the lights.

6) Replaced hatch panel as old one had been sprayed by a previous owner and was flaking badly.

7) Carried out oil change.

8) Replaced Spark Plugs.

9) Fitted nearside headlight rubber seal as it was missing.

10) Re-painted brake calipers in Red as they minging Green.

11) Fitted 205GTIDrivers stickers on the rear quarters and rear window.

12) Richbrook Aluminium Tax Disc Holder fitted.

13) Poppy Coral Carbon Effect Air Freshner fitted.

Before I did all of the above I fully detailed the car and the paintwork is in very good condition and there is very little rust. The interior is also in good condition, apart from the sagging drivers seat bolster which is a common thing.

I will add pictures of the car as and when I get a chance as a thread without them is pointless.

Future Plans are as follows:-

1) Replace the Phase 1/1.5 rear lights with Phase 2 of which I've already purchased from a kind forum member

2) Refurbish all wheels, as a good friend of mine owns a shot-blasting and painting company. I've recently purchased two genuine Speedlines to go with the other two as two are SMR's currently. I will also replace the two tyres on the new Speedline's as the SMR's have tyres on which I would replace anyway. One has a slow puncture which could just be the valve and the other is wearing on the outer edge.

3) Clean and underseal the car.

4) Clean K&N airfilter of which I already have the cleaning kit.

Cheers and thanks again for everyone's support on my queries.

Ran out of time to add the pics I wanted to at lunch time.

I also intend to change the driving lamps as the nearside one is seriously corroded.

I've just took the K&N filter off to see how easy the job was. One for the weekend as I will have to clean it when it can be left for a few days to dry out properly. I'm going to use the car tomorrow.

Cheers

I also forgot to mention on my list of items in the post on their way. Locking wheel nuts which I think will be essential as the cost of tyres these days.

Other items which I would like done on the car is have the majority of dents removed. I know a self emplyed guy who used to work for Dent Wizard and is very reasonable on pricing.

I would like to have the rear hatch re-sprayed at some point as there's bubbling in some areas as it's a poor re-spray in my opinion.

It's all fun this restoring modern day classics. I'm glad I went for a 205 as opposed to a MK4 Escort XR3i or MK3 XR2i as they last longer.

Cheers

Two genuine Speedlines arrived today, so I now have a full set. What do people think they would look refurbished in Anthracite against the Graphite Grey coachwork?

Started the Ph2 rear light conversion before my hols to Florida and failed at the 1st attempt. I am still in Florida as I type this left the job half finished in the garage.

The 1st attempt I could get the offside rear indicator to operate and I now found that the wire harness which has been made up has a faulty connection. I will therefore strip out the faulty wire and replace it with a new one. I also had problems with the license plate lights not working, however that was down to me not connecting them.

I've also just purchased a Ph2 reverse light to complete the conversion.

I'm looking forward to seeing the end results when I get home

Cheers

Ph2 light conversion now completed and I'm really pleased with the results.

I've also replaced the non-GTI gear knob insert with a Red GTI and it looks the part with the rest of the interior.

Next on the jobs list are:-

1) Replace "205" bagde on rear hatch panel as the original on has been snaped by a previous owner

2) Replace rear hatch spoiler as the current one isn't perfect

3) Add a reverse light to complete the Ph2 Lights conversion

4) Replace the rusty driving lamps

The above will be done within the next two weeks

Cheers

All of the above has been been completed in the last two weeks. I have also just finnished undersealing the underside of the nearside. The rear offside wheel arch was done last week.

I also picked up another SMR 15" wheel today, so I now have 4 Speedlines and 3 SMR's. Just need another SMR to completed the set and get then all refurbed in August/September.

I'm awaiting an internal hatch panel to arrive to cover the rear washer.

Cheers

Mini update:-

Rear hatch interior panel is now fitted. I couldn't obtain any clips from Peugeot as they had no stock shown on their system. I took the plunge and bought some fir tree clips of the same diameter from ebay and they had worked a treat.

I picked up another set of wheels last night so I now have as follows:-

7 off Speedlines & 4 off SMR's. My intention is two obtain another Speedline then get them all refurbed professionally and sell one set of Speedlines and one set of SMR's.

This all started off because I had two Speedline's and two SMR's, then I've ended up with 11 wheel to make up my one set of Speedline's.

I've ordered one of the keyrings from the group buy so looking forward to complementing my set of Pug keys.

I finnished undersealing the front offisde arch and only have the offside underside to complete now.

Tonight I have fitted a replacement offiside rear arch trim as the previous one that was on the car had a piece missing at the bottom of it and someone shaped it to look tidier. The car has improved a lot in the 3 months I've owned it.

Once the wheels are refurbed, it will look different again.

Cheers
