Cheap Place For Standard Rear Discs And Handbrake Cables?

Recommended Posts

chocolate_o_brian

As above gents and ladies, I've got my MOT coming up end of July, and the handbrake has never been right. Got a mismatch of washers and 2 cables, it's never worked properly and I failed last years MOT for the same reason. The mismatch did temp sort it, but it's basically at the stage now where one side is tight, the other is loose.

Me and mate faffed liek hell with 4 different cables (2 lh and 2 rh) to no avail. So I want to replace these and the rear discs need changing too.

So my question to the knowledgeable... where can I get some standard rear discs and genuine Peugeot handbrake cables nice and cheap. Ebay seems expensive for P&P, and I daren't ring a dealers up for their prices  Car's a 1.9 88 GTi :P

if you want genuine you have to go to the dealers, but the cables aren't that expensive.

Think a company called Paragonpug on Ebay do them, £21.99 + postage. Is that about right froma dealer or more expensive?

The issue with discs is the postage ££, unless I can get some cheap round here.

Super Josh

Definately buy genuine cables. I pissed about with some euro car parts ones recently and they were never quite right and weren't much cheaper than genuine ones.

Swapped to some genuine ones and it sorted out my handbrake problems.

Ah, makes sense. Cost me £10 for a bloody new dipstick but as I was new to Pugs then, I thought it was the going rate.

I'll look for a reputable dealer round me, order it all and pick it up to save postage me thinks.

Just wondering how much a set of standard discs will cost.

Don't suppose you have any idea what they cost do you? Just some standard rear discs

I'm gonna get good uprated ones when I have more money, MOT ticket is my aim currently.

personally, i'd get the rear discs from a good motor factors. somewhere around the £15 each mark

as for handbrake cables, you'll be surprised too know that there's probably only a £1 or so difference between motor factor and main dealer.

dealer being dearer

if that was the case, GSF is really cheap for handbrake cables then  have GSF cables on a few of my cars, no problems with them :P

Hmm, my maths for the GSF cables inc. vat is £8.62 LH and £9.26 RH. So cheaper than Paragonpug, but will compare with dealer prices when I ask I guess.

There was a set of 205 standard discs on Ebay (A2Z warehouse or something) £14.75 but about £13 postage  . So Unless the Motor Factors ones are under £28 for the pair, or indeed any other local parts place/dealer... I may be stumped into paying heavy postage on the discs themselves. (I've got spare new pads for the time being thank god).

Sorry to sound cheap I'm just trying to do the jobs on a budget but with decent parts. Sometimes the searching to save a couple of quid is more fun than scraping your knuckles fitting said parts

I buy front discs at around £15 a pair from GSF so cannot imagine the rears being much different.

£15 a pair?

I saw the rear discs for £11.75 but assumed this is each? Do you have a sneaky trade card or something?

I have a discount card but these discs don't seem to be advertised. They are Vetech or something and I just went into a store and asked what the cheapest discs they had were and got these.

FWIW, I've used GSF handbrake cables plenty of times in the past and had no issues at all with them :)

I've got GSF cables on mine and they work fine, but the thing that really gets on my wick is that the NS cable is too long and hangs down under the tank. I've just got a genuine cable to replace it and was pleasantly surprised that it only cost ~£10 from the dealer.

I was discussing the handbrake issue with Flix today when I popped round as a favour.

My thinking is that one of the cables I bought last year was a genuine one and one a replica or whatever they're called. My understanding is the 2 cables have a slight difference in length, so I've come to a conclusion...

Say I bought 2 genuine cables and they were 200cm and 202cm (this is totally hypothetical as an example). Now the gap is 2cm so as long as tightened at the handbrake they would work in unison.

Say I boguht 2 replica cables and they were 199cm and 201cm. The gap is still the stated hypothetical 2cm so would still work together, just tightened different.

But say I got one genuine and one replica (which I believe I did), than that could mess the lengths up to something like either 200cm and 201cm, or 199cm and 202cm. This would throw out the evenness and require washers etc to make the length differences correct.

Can anyone see where I'm going with this as it is the only possible solution that I can think of unless there is something very very wrong with my rear brakes.

My thinking is to get either a pair of genuine cables or a pair of replica's and not mix them. Then pop the spare pads I have on and some new cheepy discs as a MOT issue.

If anyone can throw any more possibilities into the mix, feel free, but having thought at length about it, I only get the above conclusion.

Just rang JCT600 up in Hull and asked about the handbrake cable. They're £9.80+vat each, so £22.54 by my maths plus postage. Think I may go with the GSF ones to be fair.

Peugeot's cables are £11.27 each inc VAT

Part numbers are 0000474567 and 0000474568

For that price, I'll be sticking OE for once!

Disks on the other hand are £65.22 inc VAT a pair!

Well i got a pair of handbrake cables today from a motor place for £15.65. Same brand so should fit nicely. If not, I'll be pissed to be fair.

Brake discs are more of an issue... £17.03 and £18.40 (each) from 2 places. I'm not paying £35 for a pair of standard cheapo discs... so gonna look on Ebay.

GSF do Brembo rears for £17.50 each, or cheaper but still branded IIRC, for about £11.75.

Yesterday I managed to change the discs/pads on the rear. Once you've had a go it's quite a simple job. So actually have some braking power on the rear now.

The handbrake cables are the same length as the ones that have come off, so the issue of no pull on the drivers side cannot be the cables themselves. This led me and Chris (Flix) to think, "well have the metal tubes on the bodywork been replaced", as this could bugger up the length difference in both the outer cable and the inner. Hes gonna have a look under his track car today and see if the entry points under the car are differing lengths, as he thinks his are, whereas mine aren't. This would explain the tight handbrake on one side and loose on the other, considering the calipers seem fine. If this is the case, I'll simply use some washers to space it out correctly.

Hopefully find out today, otherwise the car will fail the MOT on the handbrake - again
