Gti 6 Conversion, Tensioning The Alternator

Recommended Posts

djinuk

I know this has been dotted about previously on this forum, however i just wanted to see all in one topic how folks are modifying/making setups to tension the alternator on the gti6, and also what belt is being used.

So please advice and ideas please.

i've used the tensioner from an audi 90.

I'll be changing the radiator soon so will take a picture then.

just sorting mine out at he mo

i have removed all the tensioners but am modified the static 3 hole roller cut the slotted hole off so it turns arround in it orignal position

(not using the same hole`s, move it round 1 turn)

this is as far as i have got but i will be slotting the other hole/holes so i can get tension

my only other thoughts at the mo are power steering

i was running without but i have reconsidered....

i will get some pics later today if needed

I used an S16/Mi16 alternator mount (and top engine mount bracket) and made the adjuster arm myself using the 8 valve adjusted bolt and some 3mm thick plate.

cool, well all above seem reasonable , pete id like that photo if you get it, might have to go trawling the scrapyard. Failing that i was going to try and modify the origina 8v tensrioner to fit.

here's my last effort, quite pleased with how it came out

PICT0095.jpg

3mm plate roughly 20mm wide, 8mm wide slot for the M8 stud that goes into the alternator, and a 6mm hole drilled in the end bent at 90 degrees for the adjuster screw.

Adjuster screw and securing bolt were standard 8 valve non-PAS fixings, top bracket was a standard early 2.0 iron block non A/C bracket, bottom bracket was the same, 2.0 iron block PAS+Alternator bracket with PAS section unused.

im liking that welshpug. I under stand exactly how you have made that arm (3mm plate) but will that fit the bracket already on the gti6, i was just going to chop off what i could off the top of the bracket (pas etc) and use whats needed to secure the alternator. Is there any reason you have sorced the earlier bracket, with no pas etc.

I haven't a clue if it'll work with the later XU10 mount as I ditched mine straight away for the lighter simpler one, there's loads about and cheap enough, I paid a tenner for the last one I picked up at a scrappy.

no, the gti6 engine never had it, most 2.0 405's did, earlier 8 valve 306's, zx, xantia etc.

I fitted the tentioner off a 306 Rallye to my GTI-6 engine, and used a (HB1080G) aux drive belt from halfords.
