Sometimes the oil/water sandwich plate on the block, that cools the oil, corrodes. This will allow the coolant to be contaminated. It's worth a try.

The only way is to pressure test it, remove both water hoses block one end off then pump it up and see if it holds pressure or not.

Well the oil cooler passed pressure test. So apart from the correct thickness head gasket and new head bolts is there anything I should be worried about when I tackle a new head gasket. I have replaced two head gaskets on 205' gti's with no problems. Thanks.

About 30 psi which it held and then put it underwater just to make sure, no bubbles.

nowhere near enough im afraid, peak oil pressure on the xud is 5 bar, so about 60 odd.

Surely if it had a hole in it at the very least I would see bubbles even at low pressure.
