Rod Journal Size Of 46Mm?

Anyone know if there are any engines out there using big end diameter of 46mm?

 

I'm wondering to offset grind a 96mm DW12 crank to 100mm stroke, but need to reduce journal size to 46mm.. and therefore need to know what Rods to base any custom rod order on regarding avaliable big end bearings from other manufacturers etc.

 

Any help appreciated.

ew7 & 10 and xu5 & 7 are 45mm.

Maybe... 101mm stroke and 87mm bore = 2401cc :)

Ok, will investigate a little bit on those.

 

I guess it's easier to find a bigger variety of bearings compared to the Peugeot 1.8 litres with 45mm journal.

 

Sadly the Pauter catalog states the rod big end bore and not the crank journal diameter though.

one thing about the o.e peugeot bearing for the 45mm journal, is that they are the same width as your current journal (or at least very close) rods like the evo are 6mm wider, would imagine the bearings are a bit wide as well.

Indeed. However peugeot bearings are 20 or is it 22mm wide, whereas rods / journals are 24mm for cast cranks and 26mm for forged ones.

 

So it is room for wider bearing than OE also, at least for 26mm wide journals.

Haven't had the time to look too much for it.

Still a bit unsure if I'll go the offset grinding route, or just keep it at 96mm stroke.

 

I suppose the crank ideally need to be hardened after offsetgrinding, so it'll be an extra expense if one need a new crank later on too.

 

But I guess 45mm journal is just as good though, 101mm stroke is not a problem.

How are you grinding right to the maximum?

45mm journal with 100mm stroke will be much easier to do than 101mm.

I'm guessing you need to be a very very skilled machinist to get 5mm stroke out of 5mm offset.

My enginebuilder sent it to a skilled crankshaft grinder.

The 92mm crank I got ground for the 2.3 litre was taken to 94.5mm but that was on 47.5mm journal BMW E30 something.

 

Of course it might be it is in reality just 94.4mm stroke, I've of course never measured it.

 

But indeel 100mm would be easier than 101 for 45mm journal.

Haven't thought about that yet. However I think on my 2.3 litre engine this was not cared about at all, unless they did it without saying.
