[car_restoration] Alien Vs. 205

Recommended Posts

ALEX

Is it going to be a standard 205 colour ?

Always been a fan of Lazer green or Miami blue. though Silver and Sorrento Green look good.

I find colours look better than others in certain light.

Yes 205 color indeed. It was sorrento to start with, although it's a nice color, I don't think I will paint it sorrento now, after removing all traces of it with white :)

I like keeping colours original to the factory spec. My thinking is that if it's an investment I think it will hold a better value if kept the same colour.

Why I think that is because when someone re-sprays a car a different colour, they usually don't go to the lengths of doing the inside. Pop off a door card and or see the different colour poking out of hard to paint places makes the car look like it's an old banger,

Even though you're doing a proper job (unlike many) at some point of the sale you're probably going to disclose that it was originally Sorrento green.

Potential buyers that are after a mint example (for the extortionate money these are going for now) might need further convincing that its been painted as good as you've done it.

Also a couloir change is considered as a modification IMO. not one that is easily reverted.

But.. I am torn when it comes to these decisions, for instance if it was an undesirable colour to start with i.e. pink. Then it would be a no brainer.

Sorrento though is a nice colour. I'd have kept it. but that's just me.

Yeah I know, however it was a bit bashed up so when I got it so it will never really be orginal spec anyway, door cards etc. was not there.

And I think Steel grey will go better with my red 405 and orange 205.

Selling it? Hehe.. I rather have the car pressed than selling it. Not doing such amounts of work to sell it, then I would probably just do a quick job, as the extra hours looking for rust under perfectly fine looking paint and/or underseal is really where lot of the work is.

It's not worth that big amounts anyway, hopefully it'll be a nice realible weekend car with a 16v conversion.

Bought 3 litres of steel grey today.. in total when thinned it will be 6 litres of paint. I hope that will do it, I tend to use much more paint than the guys in the paintshop suggest :D

Beeing a dad takes time, so didn't manage anymore than just spraying some base-coat in the engine compartment, 95% finished.

Well, will continue sometime later :D

Managed to get some hours this evening. Sprayed color/base coat on the whole car at visible locations ;)

Also sprayed clearcoat in the engine compartment and in front arches, in addition to spraying the front wings.

A tad too little pressure on the gun when I sprayed the wing that's not on the car, so I might sand that back and give it another coat.

The engine compartment and the mounted wing turned out quite nice and shiny.

Also found a small dent at the right rear window, so added some filler and need to sand that out next time before adding basecoat.

Finished clear coating the whole body some days ago, was back inspecting today, sadly a few runs on the rear wings, however I don't have time to sand and re-paint so I need to try to fix it later by sanding and rubbing it away.

Anyway the car is quite bling and I put wheels on the rear and got the subframe ready for fitting today.

Need to get car out soon to be able to paint bonnet, doors and rear hatch etc.

Dropped by garage late last evening, mounted the strut assemblies.

Missing one of the subframe counterplates for the rear subframe mounts and typically NFP.

Anyone know if they can be bought 3rd party?

its a straightforward enough part to replicate, iirc looks like a dogbone of flat steel with a 10x1.5 thread in it.

I know, but my problem is time these days :)

Having another kid on 4-5 weeks time, and building a shed etc. that's not finished, in addition to trying to finish painting the rest of the 205 :D

Anyway, I seem to have placed an order for these parts at my local dealer back in 2007 when I took the 205 apart, so they still had 2 of them in stock, woho :)

Yes, they still had both actually, picked them up this morning.

He said they would've got binned in 2 years time, they apparently bin parts after 10 years in storage.

I had placed the order back in February 2008 :)

Moved the car out of the booth yesterday and moved doors, bonnet and hatch into booth..

I just hope I'll be able to sand out the rear wing runs of clearcoat that's there, without actually sanding through...

As the missus and kids were away for some days I managed to prep and prime the doors / bonnet and rear hatch this weekend.

Still a bit work left until it's ready painted, but at least one step forward :)

Glad to see that this one is still progressing :)

Did you manage to sand out the lacquer runs on the rear quarter, or is that still on the to-do list?

I try my best, but have been busy building a shed, in addition to buying a 5008 familiy car that also needed quite a bit of work....

The runs will be the last thing to do I think, for all I know the paint might get scratched during assembly process, so repainting might be necessary anyway. So better not do any work on the paint till I know it is for good use :)

Managed to get my parents to babysit the oldest one yesterday, so had a go in the garage.

Limited on time, the result came out 90% with some runs and a bit of small dust here and there in the paintwork. I hope it'll be possible to wetsand and polish out most of it this time too, but not until it's mounted on the car.

Paint started to run quite badly on the nearest door in this picture, I decided to throw as much paint at it as it would take, making the whole lower part of the door a big run, i.e. no visible runs on the panel anymore, but lots of paint on the floor below :D. That's how it goes when painting in wrong ambient temperature and in a hurry.

Re-did one of the doors a few days ago, in addition to spray the upper side of the bonnet.

I soon need to get the parts mounted to the shell, and start painting the trim black.

Some slight more progress. Did paint some of the side plastics today, bumpers etc. but still missing a couple of the black/grey trims that I need to find somewhere.

Also f***ed up as I was going to re-do the bonnet and just "fix" two small dents I did find on it.. .

Well it ended with two new dents just sticking upwards now.. so next time I'll have even more to do with that bonnet...

The door was OK anyway and good to go.

seems I am not the only one running low on the rare rescource of "project build time" phew...good there is no required completion date on such a project :-)

Keep at it, even after days that seem like its going backwards, as its all about the endresult. "#Lets make the 205 great again.." with an american accent ;-) As it starts to look tidy

Time is indeed not easy anymore... Good that a 205 is so much less work than a 405 T16 when it comes to total strip and rebuild.

Painted the side badges and the some of the trim inserts the other day. Need more coats on the inserts. Side badges is finished with clear coat now :)

Not much progress lately. But managed to put the rack together yesterday.

Still need some hydraulics and rod ends, need to put it on car before moving it as now both wheels live their own lives.
